France saved. Austria fail. Masurian Lakes. Germany’s colonies gobbled up. The Race to the Sea and the Western Front’s stabilisation.

October
The Race to the Sea ends. Ypres & Yser. Poland invaded. Austria fail. Turkey enters the war.

November
Britain suffers its first naval defeat in 100 years. Britain repulsed in German East Africa. Germany and Russia battle in Poland. Austria invades Serbia again. Major fighting at Ypres comes to an end (for now).

December
Austria’s 3rd invasion of Serbia. The destruction of Germany’s Pacific Squadron. Austria’s successful offensive against Russia. Turkey attacks Russia. Christmas Day truces.

1915

January
Turkey’s disaster at Sarikamish. Zeppelins bomb Britain. The British and German navies clash. Turkey invades Egypt.

February
Turkey fails in Egypt but starts to deal with the Armenians. The 2nd Battle of the Masurian Lakes. Unrestricted submarine warfare. British plans to attack Constantinople.

March
Failed Allied offensives on the Western Front. Austro-Hungarian reverses in Galicia. Franco-British naval assault on the Dardanelles repulsed. Italy’s drift towards war.

April
Turkish persecution of Armenians intensifies. Italy agrees to enter the war. Germany’s first poison gas attacks at Ypres. Allied landings on Gallipoli go badly wrong.

May
Italy joins the Allies. Germany’s gas attacks at Ypres. The Gorlice-Tarnów offensive smashes Russia. Bloody stalemate at Gallipoli. The sinking of the Lusitania. Intensified extermination of the Armenians.

June
Italy attacks along the Isonzo. More bloody stalemate in Gallipoli. More German & Austro-Hungarian gains in Poland & Galicia. Zeppelins bomb and are bombed. Allied advances in Africa.

July
A year of war. Armenian genocide. One Battle of the Isonzo ends, another begins. Victories for Britain in Mesopotamia and Germany in Poland. The flame thrower. America threatens war.

August
More German advances in Poland. The August offensive in Gallipoli. Italian failures along the Isonzo. Germany calls off the U-boats. Turkey’s continuing extermination of the Armenians.

September
The Eastern Front stabilises. Political crisis in Russia. Turkey’s continued extermination of the Armenians. Failed Allied Western Front offensives. The “tank” is tested.

October
Serbia invaded, properly this time. Political turmoil in Greece as Allies land in Salonika. Edith Cavell executed. Another Isonzo offensive. New leaders for France and Australia.

November
Serbia overrun. More Italian failures on the Isonzo. Britain blocked in Mesopotamia. Hunger stalks Europe. Calling time on Gallipoli.

December
Evacuations from Gallipoli. The end of Serbia. The Siege of Kut begins. Plans for next year.

1916

January
Turkish victory in Gallipoli. British reverses in Mesopotamia. German preparations for the Verdun offensive. Russian successes in Eastern Anatolia.

February
Russia smashes Turkey in the Caucasus. Germany launches its Verdun offensive.

March
The Verdun meat-grinder continues. Another Isonzo offensive fails. German East Africa invaded. Desperate British attempts to raise the siege of Kut.

April
Verdun grinds on. Russian victories against Turkey. The fall of Kut. Rebellion in Dublin.

May
Verdun carnage continues. Germany calls off the U-boats, again. Austria-Hungary attempts to knock Italy out of the war. Britain and France divide up the Middle East. Clash of the German & British fleets.

June
Crisis at Verdun. The Brusilov Offensive smashes Austria-Hungary. Preparations for the Somme. The Arab Revolt kicks off.

July
Carnage on the Somme. Germany’s last attempt to take Verdun. The continuing Brusilov Offensive. Dada and the Cabaret Voltaire.

August
The Somme lumbers on. Italy wins a battle. Romania joins the Allies. All change as Falkenhayn is replaced by Hindenburg and Ludendorff.

September
The Somme grinds on. Attack of the tanks. The Brusilov Offensive ends in failure. Romania begins to reap the whirlwind. The Red Baron claims his first victims. A very short battle of the Isonzo.

October
The Somme plods on. France recovers ground at Verdun. Romania invaded. Central Europe goes hungry. Another short battle of the Isonzo.

November
Another battle of the Isonzo. The Somme finally comes to an end. Verdun continues.

December
Romania crushed. Lloyd George succeeds Asquith. Verdun finally ends in bloody victory for France. Nivelle succeeds Joffre. Reverses for Turkey in Sinai and Arabia. Rasputin assassinated.
