16 October 1915 – Oswald Boelcke – Ace

Boelcke and “friend”

Oswald Boelcke becomes the first German “ace” today when he shot down his fifth victory, a French Voisin B.I near St. Souplet.

Unlike previous diary entries, which go into great detail about the combat, this one simply states:

“Yesterday, the 16th, I shot down a French Voisin biplane near P.”

His colleague and rival Max Immelmann in FA62 has four victories.

Boelcke’s previous four victories were:

  • 4 July 1915, Morane Parasol, Valenciennes
  • 19 August 1915, Bristol Biplane, Front lines
  • 9 September 1915, Morane two-seater, French lines
  • 25 September 1915, Voisin or Farman, Pont-a-Mousson
