Italy is still notionally allied to Austria-Hungary and Germany, even though it left its allies in the lurch last August by remaining neutral. Now Sonnino, the foreign minister, calls upon the cabinet to agree the formal repudiation of this alliance. This step is needed to facilitate negotiations with Britain, France and Russia, which he says are at an advanced stage. The cabinet agrees to repudiate the German and Austro-Hungarian alliance.
Sonnino is not being entirely truthful. Negotiations with the Allies are no longer at an advanced stage, they have concluded. Italy has agreed to enter the war against Austria-Hungary and Germany, to be paid for by territorial adjustments at Austria-Hungary’s expense.
