13/4/1915 Confused fighting near Basra

Yesterday evening Ottoman forces under Suleyman Askeri tried and failed to storm British positions near Basra at Shaiba. Now they try to sneak around the British forces, bypassing them to make directly to the British occupied city of Basra. The British realise what is happening and now they attack the Ottomans. After some confused fighting the British and Indian infantrymen eventually rout the much larger force of Arab irregulars who make up the bulk of the Turkish force. With the Arabs chased away, the British decide to attack the Turkish regular troops who are the toughest of the enemy forces in the area. But first they must find them; the Turks have retreated away from the immediate vicinity of the British.
