17/3/1915 [Western Front] Joffre halts the Champagne Offensive

The French have been attacking German forces in the Champagne region, perhaps hoping to recover the vineyards from which the popular sparkling wine is made. They have made intermittent attempts to push back the Germans here since late December, but little progress has been made and the Germans are showing no sign of breaking. Joffre decides that enough is enough, ordering an end to the offensive. He hopes at some future date to launch further attacks on the Germans in the Champagne sector, but for now the French there will assume a defensive posture. The French have suffered nearly a 100,000 casualties in the fighting since the start of the attacks in December, the Germans roughly half that number.
