[interlude] The kitsch world of World War 1 memorabilia

The BBC News Magazine has an interesting piece by Chris Haslam on all the tourist tat offered for sale in the Belgian town of Ypres (scene of the memorable Battle of Ypres), pondering whether it dishonours the dead or exploits their memory etc. Mr Haslam mentions such things as souvenir mugs, chocolate poppies, helmeted teddy bears, and Passchendaele beer. All this makes Ypres sound more fascinating than I had thought as a place for a future visit.
