18/10/1914 [Ypres] A nasty surprise for the British

The Belgian army is defending the line of the Yser river against German forces intent on advancing down the coast. The Germans are increasing the pressure but the Belgians are still holding on.

Further south, the British are advancing east from Ypres, hoping to exploit a wide gap there between German armies. At least, they think there is a gap. But in the late afternoon, they start encountering German skirmishers and pickets. Could there be more Germans here than expected?
