25/7/1914 Bethmann Hollweg plays down the crisis

The senior military and political leaders of Germany are returning from their holidays. Army chief of staff Helmuth von Moltke, war minister Erich von Falkenhayn and Chancellor Theobald von Bethmann Hollweg are all back at their desks.

In his first report to the Kaiser, who is still on his own nautical holiday, Bethmann Hollweg plays down the crisis. He mentions that the Serbians have replied to the ultimatum and that Giesl has left Vienna, but not that Serbia has already started to mobilise.
