23/7/1914 Sazonov’s warning goes unheeded

Today is Thursday. On Tuesday, the German ambassador to St. Petersburg was warned by Russia’s foreign minister that Austria-Hungary should not even think of issuing an ultimatum against Russia. Sazonov further told Pourtalès that Serbia has a firm friend in Russia.

Pourtalès did not wire back an account of this conversation. Instead he sent back a report in the post. Today it arrives in the German foreign ministry. No one pays it any great attention. It is not passed on to Austria-Hungary with any great urgency.
