17/7/1914 The Russians deduce the timing of Austria-Hungary’s ultimatum

The Russians have cracked the code used on Austro-Hungarian diplomatic telegrams. Now they read an encrypted message from Vienna to the embassy in St. Petersburg, inquiring as to when exactly President Poincaré of France will be leaving at the end of his state visit. The Russians already know from Shebeko’s report from Vienna of Lützow’s conversation with De Bunsen that the Austro-Hungarians are planning to send an ultimatum to Serbia. Now they are able to guess that the ultimatum will be sent on the departure of the French president.
