10/7/1914 Italy makes Austria-Hungary an offer

The Italians seem to sense that Austria-Hungary is planning something against Serbia. Italy’s foreign minister, Antonio di San Giuliano, suggests to the Austro-Hungarian ambassador that if the South Tyrol was ceded then Italy would support Austria-Hungary, or at least remain neutral. The South Tyrol has a large population of Italian speakers. It also has the country estate of Conrad, chief of staff of the Austro-Hungarian army.
